I was fortunate to be asked to contribute to a great music-ed text called “Becoming Musical” by Frank Abrahams and Ryan John. The text is a wonderful addition to a music-ed library and should be required reading for aspiring teachers. There are several chapters with essays and stories from practicing teachers who are “in the field.” I was able to write about my experiences using Dalcroze Eurhythmics in my public school practice and how that work has shaped my approach to pedagogy. You can find the book from GIA publishing and it is also at Amazon.com.
My essay outlines some practical and philosophical strategies for implementing a Dalcroze-based public school curriculum. Some of these ideas and concepts include :
- Creating a culture of movement.
- Connecting art and feeling to music.
- Social interaction and interpersonal growth through music.
- Time/Space/Energy in public school practice.
